Exam tips

Here are some words used in an exam. They will help you understand what you have to do to answer the question:

Compare – outline the similarities or differences
Contrast – compare certain things by discussion of their main differences.
Conflict – an argument or difference of opinion
Describe – outline the main features or characteristics or give a step-by-step account.
Discuss – identify both sides of a debate and support your point of view with reasons.
Explain – give reasons; to make plain how something works.
Features – a distinct part of something.
Identify – point out and name
Illustrate – give an example of 
Justify – give a good reason for
Outline – describe the main features or characteristics without going into details. 
Briefly outline – briefly means – shortly, in a few sentences
Role – the job or function a person or organisation carries out
State – name or give
Suggest – put forward ideas or give an opinion
